International Medicine SO/DOCARES

International Medicine club at TouroCOM-Harlem is dedicated to learning more about the health disparities people around the world face when it comes to having access to quality medical care and how we can take that knowledge with us into our future practices of taking care of patients. As future physicians, it is important to be cognizant of different cultures and their views on medicine or the alternative treatments they use to better understand our patient population and cultivate a trusting relationship. International Medicine provides the opportunity for medical students to become involved in activities that take them beyond the walls of our school by holding a health fair at a local mosque for the Muslim community, organizing medical mission trips abroad and other community outreach programs. We also organize popular events such as Taste of the World to showcase cuisine from different cultures cooked by students to help raise money for local charities in the process. Whether these are through events held on campus, in the community or on international trips, our purpose is to expose students to communities they would rarely get the chance to encounter, motivate them to become aware of suffering around the world and enhance their experience as a health provider whether they may be local or abroad.

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Interest Group (PMRIG)

The field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), also known as Physiatry, is a medical specialty that advocates the process of restoring function to individuals who have been disabled as a result of a disease, inherent disorder, or injury.

A physiatrist is a licensed MD or DO who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation and who has completed four years undergraduate training, four years of medical school (allopathic or osteopathic), one preliminary (or transitional year), and three years of residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. One to two year fellowship training options are also available in Pain Management, Spinal Cord Injury, Traumatic Brain Injury, Electrodiagnostics, Sports Medicine, and Cancer Rehabilitation.

Physiatrists treat patients with such medical diagnoses as spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, orthopedic injuries both pre- and post-operative, musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes, nerve injuries, symptomatic manifestations of multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and cancer. Due to the integrated approach of physiatry and broad scope of diagnoses, physiatrists often work very closely with other medical professionals including neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, anesthesiologists, internists, family practitioners, pediatricians, radiologists physical, occupational, and speech therapists, and social workers.

In essence Physiatry enables patients to achieve his or her maximum functional capacity by utilizing an integrated multidisciplinary approach.

Here at TouroCOM we host many different events including guest speakers and Ultrasound workshops to better expose students to the field of PM&R. Membership is FREE and students will make connections in the field that will last a lifetime.
